next board meeting:Tuesday, September 9th - 3:00pm - 4:30pm Anyone can attend board meetings; you do not need to be a current director to join. If you're interested in becoming a board member, you can get voted in during one of our board meetings as long as there are available seats and we have quorum! become a directorThe Board of Directors are volunteers who oversee garden staff, vote and approve budgeting and operational decisions, and help with various facets of garden management! To be a member, you must be a UVic student, faculty, or staff member. That's it- no gardening or relevant experience required!
We encourage every board member to curate their own relationship with the garden. This provides an excellent opportunity to cater your time to your needs! Whether you're looking for experience in events planning, volunteer management, gardening, budgeting, all of the above, or something totally different, we can make it happen! We meet once a month in the summer, and every other week during September - April. These are usually hybrid meetings with in-person and Zoom options. Meetings are usually an hour, and will cover whatever is on the agenda. We also like planning extra social events to just have a good time! We'd love for board members to gain relevant, practical experience that can benefit them. Serving on the board is volunteer work, looks great on a resume, and is a fun way of meeting new people and getting involved at UVic. You can see our current board here. board member faqDo I need to know how to garden? Do I even need to like gardening? Nope! It might seem counter-intuitive, but what makes a great board member doesn't necessarily equal what makes a great gardener - although there's certainly some shared skills, and many of us do love gardening. The truth is, so much of what CCG does is less about 'gardening' and more about growing food, building community, and being a resource to students. Of course we love board members who like getting their hands in the dirt, but we also love board members who have never grown a single plant in their life! How do I join, exactly? Come to a board meeting! Check our events page for details about the next upcoming meeting, and join in person or on Zoom. Current board members will vote in anyone who's interested in joining. You'll receive a BoD Adventure Guide with all the information you need to get started on your quest! :) If you don't want to show up blind, you can also email Lyndsay or Juls to introduce yourself and let us know your intention so we can add it to the agenda ahead of time! What level of commitment do you expect from board members? Board meetings are a 2-3 hour commitment per month from September-April, and 1 hour a month in summer. If you're not able to attend because of schedule conflicts, that's okay; we often ask for input over email or Slack. Being available remotely is still super helpful! Beyond that, it's up to you. We're happy if you want to take on an extra project or task, but we're also happy if you just show up to meetings and help us keep things running smoothly! What are some examples of "extras" board members might participate in? - Tabling at Clubs Days and similar events to tell people about the garden - Helping to screen submissions and collage our journal, Sundew - Joining in to our regular weekly work parties at the garden - Helping with garden care over the summer - Organizing and planning a new section or piece of the garden - Planning or facilitating a workshop - Helping with event set-up or planning - Financial and budgeting strategy - Policy proofreading and editing - Independent research or studying on a related topic - Something else you're interested in!
