Native Plants for Sunny Locations

  • Nodding Onion (Allium cernuum)
    – Blooms in June, presenting small, pink, nodding umbel flowers
    – Goes well with May-blooming common camas (Camassia quamash)
  • Broad-leaved Stonecrop (Sedum spathulifolium)
    – Drought tolerant perennial
  • Small Flower Alumroot (Heuchera micrantha var. diversifolia)
    – Drought-tolerant saxifrage
    – Does well in dry rockery walls
    – Grows easily in containers
  • Orange Honeysuckle (Lonicera ciliosa)
    – Deciduous vine that blooms in May
    – Attracts hummingbirds and has shiny red berries for fall interest

Native Plants for a Rock Garden
The following plants need full sun and a dry environment.
They are sometimes hard to find and hard to start.


  • Broad-Leaved Stonecrop (Sedum spathulfolium)
  • Oregon Stonecrop (Sedum oreganum)
  • Woolly Sunflower (Eriophyllum lanatum)
  • Kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi)
  • Columbia Lewisia (Lewisia columbiana)
  • Spreading Phlox (Phlox diffusa)
  • Parsley Fern or Rock Brake (Cryptogramma acrostichoides)
  • Penstemons
    – good for new rock gardeners
  • Cardwell’s Penstemon (Penstemon cardwellii)
  • Davidson’s Penstemon (Penstemon davidsonii)
  • Rock Penstemon (Penstemon rupicola)
  • Shrubby Penstemon (Penstemon fruticocus)
  • Common Harebell (Campunala rotundifolia)


Deciduous Plants For A Hedgerow (bigger plants)
  • Mock Orange (Philadelphus lewisii)
    – Sun to semi-shade
    – Grows to 15′
    – Orange scented blossoms flower mid-May > Learn More
  • Red Flowering Current (Ribes sanguineum)
    – Sun to semi-shade
    – Grows 3′-10′
  • Saskatoon Berry (Amelanchier alnifolia)
    – Sun
    – Grows to 15′
  • Snowberry (Symphoricarpos albus)
    – Sun
    – Grows to 6′
  • Thimbleberry (Rubs parviflorus)
    – Sun
    – Grows 3′-6′
    – requires little pruning, just dead, unruly branches or dieback
    – base offers an opportunity for developing a ground cover of native plants
  • Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
    – Dry / Sun
    – Grows to 8′

Attracting Bumblebees

  • Bumblebees generally prefer blue, purple and yellow flowers from members of the aster family (Asteraceae), mustard family (Brassicaceae), and mint family (Lamiaceae)
    – Alliums (Allium spp.)
    – Brodiaea (Brodiaea spp.)
    – Lupines (Lupinus polyphyllus)
    - Bee balm/wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)


Attracting Butterflies

  • Some plants that attract butterflies include:
    – White Fawn Lilies (Erthyronium oregonum)
    – Kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uvaursi)
    – Pearly Everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea)
    – Goat’s Beard (Arunucus dioicus)
    – Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)

Attracting Hummingbirds
Hummingbirds love tubular blooms and orange and red flowers! They also appreciate a spot to hydrate.
