poetry picnics 2024
The garden's poetry picnics are a free, outdoor, intimate, chill open mic and headliner event meant to provide a welcoming space for new and established poets and writers. It's also just a lovely environment to listen to some poetry!
The event is free entry, but we welcome donations for the UVSS foodbank. There will also be a cash donation jar for the headlining poet. Books by the headlining poet, copies of The Malahat Review, and copies of the garden journal Sundew may also be available for purchase, so please bring cash if you're wanting to pick any up! The times below are approximate. Sometimes we have a shorter or longer open mic, depending. 6 - 6:15pm: open mic sign-ups 6:20 - 6:50pm: open mic 7:00pm: headliner start Each event should be wrapping up around 7:30pm or earlier. Folks are welcome to arrive early and stay late to chat, too! Seating: limited; picnic tables and low wooden benches, plus a few chairs. Feel free to bring your own picnic blanket or camping chairs, or email [email protected] if you'd like a chair saved for accessibility. Drinks: We have tap water. Tea or lemonade, weather depending, will be available free while supply lasts. Bring your own mug or bottle! :) Bathroom: There is one compost toilet on site. It's wheelchair friendly, but there is a slight lip to the cement pad, and it is currently reachable by a grass path. See our location page for more detailed accessibility info, including directions. |
