Avoid plant stress by doing the following:

• building healthy soil
• ensuring good drainage
• don’t plant too close together
• avoid monoculture
• interplant (leeks, purple sprouting broccoli)
• Use alliums to disguise scent / confuse pests
• Marigolds deter whiteflies
  TIP: Weevils? Try using rhubarb leaves around the base of a plant!

To prevent pests is to attract beneficials; Linda Gilkeson says "the answer to bugs is more bugs!" Try planting insectary plants like:

• Apiaceae (or umbelliferae, or carrot family); plants in the carrot family include:
  • Parsley
  • Angelica
  • Queen Anne’s lace
  • Lovage
  • Anise
  • Parsnip
• Yarrow harvest flowers / yarrow tea 
• Sweet Alyssum for hoverflies (voracious aphid eaters)
  
• Comfrey grown under fruit trees accumulates nutrients—cut down & mulch! This attracts beneficial assassin bugs, ladybugs, lacewings, syrphid flies, and tachinid flies
• ​Nasturtium acts as a sacrificial crop; it will attract aphids but keep them from your other plants (and then attract aphid-eating bugs like ladybugs!)
